PROJECT 1- R*EXPERIENTIAL MARKET

In this module, we are assigned to complete a community service event/task from three options: REX Experiential Market, PPR Apartment Klang, Kebun-kebun Bangsar.
I had chosen REX experiential market, obviously we need to held an event which comprises of different booths especially to search for old vendors which have their own personal historical value and background behind. Our objective for this market is focusing on the revitalisation of Chinatown and spread the background and stories behind those old vendors.

The experiential market team is contributed by 30 people and divided into 6 groups. Each group are required to search at least 2 vendors from Chinatown/Petaling Street. After few weeks of vendors searching, data collecting and have interaction among vendors and students within the site, we had came out with various types of booths including booth for kebun-kebun Bangsar in the market during 3rd November 2018 (10am-4pm) at REX Cinema KL.

So , We began our search around Chinatown by talking to a few elders around some of the longest-standing nodes of Petaling Street (which have yet to be taken over by foreign labour). Among which are the hustling vendors at Pasar Karat, the prestigious and long-standing Kwong Fook Wing Tailor, the integral associations and their members as well as a butcher in the semi-vacant wet market.
Lastly, We collaged certain landmarks around the area, as well as put old and new photos as comparison and added QR codes to watch the interviews of the fellow locals. we decided on making a cultural map to subtly remind the public of a wake-up call to preserve these traditions of the old before they are lost.We set all of this up in a kopitiam setting as an informal way to get to know the aunties and uncles who stopped by our booth and to share their very own stories with us on the day itself.
D-Day

In the end, it's been a great experience for me as an architecture student to contribute to the society in a different way - revitalize the forgotten trades of Chinatown. The event was ended successfully and we were so glad that we had completed a big community service event in Chinatown which we couldn't have experienced before. Throughout the whole process, I have learned so much about the dying trades of Chinatown after really having the courage to talk to these aunties and uncles. I've learned to appreciate my elders as they are part of our heritage. Besides, I would like to thank our dearest tutor, Ar. Lee Sze Ee which had helping and guiding us along the way and giving us a lot of suggestions to enhance our market booths and the ideas. We appreciate it very much after the event day!
