Asian Architecture explores the history of South, Southeast and East Asian architecture as a whole within a systematic treatment of architectural design and construction, building science and technology, garden design and city planning through three key themes: sustainability, tradition and modernity & globalisation. These themes will guide the organisation of weekly lecture and projects, which will proceed from the establishment of a basic theoretical apparatus to the examination of specific cases. Students will develop understanding on Asian architecture and urbanism and interpret Asian architectural language through research poster and oral presentation

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the historical development of the main strands of Asian architecture

2. Identify a broad range of issues related to the historical and chronological transitions of Asian architectural history

3. Interpret architectural language in relation to the development of Asian architecture and urbanism based on the themes of tradition, modernity and globalisation

4. Analyse and discuss the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural and intellectual context within the Asian region

5. Differentiate the way in which many varied factors contribute to the development of Asian architecture and urbanism

6. Produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of Asian architecture and urbanism in relation to relevant issues within the contemporary architecture and design.

Project 1 - Research In Asian Architecture

This project is a research driven that requires us to research and discuss the significant issues to generate a critical and clearer understanding of tradition, modernity and globalisation in the Asian architectural contexts. Hence, this project is introduced to activities which requires us to conduct a case study of an Asian architecture - either ancient or contemporary, followed by data collection, indexing, analysis of information, compilation, report form writing, lastly presentation.

In group of 6-7, we are to select an Asian architecture with their own historical development, architectural value and layout case studying and issues relating to the historical and chronological transitions of their history. The research area we chose is about traditional peranakan houses and our research topic is 'The Evolution Of Peranakan Chinese Homes As A Reflection Of Their Social Status And Amalgamated Ethnic Identity Over The 19th To 20th Century.

During final submission, an A1 research poster and presentation slides were submitted, accompanied with a research proposal before the research conducted

Reflection: Through this assignment, I've understood that Architecture is not just aesthetics, there are many other aspects that contributes to great architecture. It is important for architecture to be designed according to context to generate a positive impact on its surrounding environment and people. Moreover, I've developed a deeper understanding of various other topics related to architecture like building feng shui, building layout and more through researching. Due to this assignment being one of the very few research assignments that we have, I've managed to learn more on research strategies and how to write a proper research paper which I believe will greatly benefit me in the future.

Project 2 - Contextual Architecture Study

Asian Architecture Contextual Study draf

In this project, we need to analyse how the selected architectural design responded to its contexts. Findings from the study is presented in the form of A2 presentation visual by integrating architectural design and research through a specific case study, supporting students’ design through extensive research within the framework of Contextual Architecture in Asia. In this project, our case study is about the Yusuhara Bridge Museum by Kengo Kuma and we had to conduct an analysis of its Contextual Architecture elements which may include :

i.   Space organization and access hierarchy
ii.  Sky line, compression and height
iii.  Features related to the form of the building
iv.  Building material and systems
v.   Image making elements
vi.  Dimensions of history and social memories

We are to compile all the findings in one A2 visual presentation which need to be submitted during submission.

Reflection: The 2nd assignment, I've realized how important of a role the local context plays in the design process of an architecture.  It showed how the architect took into consideration of these many different aspects in order to create an architecture that's unique and represents the place well while still being able to fit into site without creating chaos to the on site elements. To understand how ACTIC was designed according to its local context and the site's history was really eye opening. This project showed me the importance of designing according to site context and how architecture responds to the need of people.
